NEW YORK - Peter Steele, the driving force behind the Brooklyn-based goth/metal quartet Type O Negative, died Wednesday of apparent heart failure. He was 48.
In an email, Mike Renault, the band's manager said, "Peter passed away last night. As of now it appears to have been heart failure. That's all the details we have right now."
"Today is a very sad day in metal. End of an era. Peter Steele passed today. I loved my friend…our idol…my heart is with his band and family…"
Steele, whose real name is Petrus T. Ratajczyk and hailed from Brooklyn, N.Y., was known as a bassist, singer, and as the band's website said, a "control freak." The 6'7'' composer of gothic metal was also known for his dark humor and low heavy voice. He was born in 1962 and released seven studio albums with Type O Negative between 1991 and 2007.

Pete Steele Dies Aged 48
Reports have surfaced stating that Pete Steele, frontman for Brooklyn-based metal band Type O Negative, died on the evening of April 14, 2010 from heart failure.
No official statements released but the website for rock radio station KNAC.com is reporting that they have been able to confirm “according to a source from within the band” that Peter Steele has indeed passed away from heart failure at age 48. They add that the singer was apparently Ill for a few days prior to his death.
During the band’s time in the spotlight, the musician appeared on the cover of Playgirl and posed fully nude for the magazine. Steele was known to suffer from depression and had had issues with substance abuse. In 2005, his Carnivore bandmate Keith Alexander was killed in a bike accident in Brooklyn.

Peter Steele (Type O Negative) (1962 – 2010)

Back in 2005, many people were shocked when they logged on to the TYPE O NEGATIVE web site and saw a gravestone with the words “[P]eter Steele – 1962 – 2005 …. Free At Last” carved on it. According to Epinions.com, there were rumors at the time that Steele was sick (with anything from cancer to AIDS), was on his deathbed, attempted suicide … and the list goes on.
Type O Negative's Peter Steele Is Alive
Type O Negative… is a difficult band to describe. And I have loved this band since the beginning.
The band collectively known as Type O Negative is: Kenny Hickey, guitar; Johnny Kelly, drums; Josh Silver, piano/keyboards; and Peter Steele, bass/vocals.
With these guys in Type O… you never know how things are going to play out until they do. Scheduled to interview the notoriously reclusive Peter Steele on Wednesday, March 1st (Ash Wednesday), things fell apart when Peter failed to call. But, mercifully, things came together… but not without some small drama…

TYPE O NEGATIVE TALKS JAIL AND FAMILY BETRAYAL, WANTED DEATH
Type O Negative has released their new album, Dead Again, and it's the first CD released on SPV Records and the first since vocalist/bassist Peter Steele was released from jail. Peter Steele says 'Dead Again' is a very personal album, and he relates to it on many levels.
Dead Again's song "Tripping A Blind Man" is a diatribe on how the six-foot-eight singer felt when his own family decided what was in his best interest, which turned out to be jail, rehab, and the psychiatric ward.
Type O Negative is gearing up for a tour of Europe with dates scheduled through July 7. For a complete list of festival and headline dates, please visit Typeonegative.net. Dead Again debuted at Number 27 on the Billboard 200 album charts upon its release.

Peter Steele's Interview 2009
How's touring with Coal Chamber been going?
Very good, they're great guys and one great lady of course in the band and I think we complement each other very well.
A lot of people think you're strange bedfellows
I've always found that interesting, my ultimate, I would love to see a concert of Dead Can Dance, Devo and Laibach.
I never found it interesting to have three thrash bands all together, its kind of boring but I'm not saying you put like a reggae band on with a punk band, I mean not going too far but similar types of music, although Devo compared to Laibach, that might be as broad as reggae and punk.
Do you regret doing the Playgirl thing that people have taken that image and..
No I don't. I don't subscribe to PlayGirl but when I look through it, every other guy was flaccid.
I never expected to appeal to males and I've done signings at stores where guys would come up to me with that issue and the pages would be all stuck together and some of them would even be damp and I'd go this is nice!
You don't think that's the whole vampire thing?
No I don't think it was the teeth, some woman just didn't like me and wanted to show it
Have you put more muscle weight on?
I haven't worked out in a week because of the schedule here, so I mean I'm kinda flattered that you say that because I feel like I'm losing muscle tone when I'm home I eat more and I drink more alcohol than I do on the road. I've got low blood sugar so if I don't eat I start to shake and I get cranky and tired usually on tour I have a box of protein bars I carry one and just pop them if I feel shaky and it calms me down makes me into a human being again.

Whs is Peter Steele?

Peter Steele (born Petrus T. Ratajczyk on January 4, 1962 in Brooklyn, New York, U.S.[1] - April 14, 2010[2]) was the lead singer, bassist, and composer for the Gothic metal band Type O Negative. Steele, who stands 6' 7" (201 cm) tall, has a low, bass heavy voice, which is one of the most recognizable features in Type O Negative's music.
Before joining Type O Negative, he played for the metal group Fallout and the thrash band Carnivore.
In April 2007, Steele revealed that he began identifying himself as Roman Catholic in recent years, after decades of self-professed atheism. In an interview with Decibel magazine, Steele explains “There are no atheists in foxholes, they say, and I was a foxhole atheist for a long time.
After his release from prison he was forced to leave his beloved job for the NYC Parks Department to go on tour with TON. He can now sometimes be sighted raking leaves and removing litter from truck stops and hotel parking lots across the country.
